La Fecha (The Date)

Two things first :

  1. You don't automatically capitalize days of the week or months of the year in Spanish like we do in English. (You can if it's a heading or at the beginning of a sentence.)
  2. The first column in a Spanish calendar will be Monday, not Sunday, like on our American calendar. The week starts with Monday, and ends with Sunday. (Think about why that might make sense.)

Los Días de la Semana (The Days of the Week)

  • lunes (Monday)
  • martes (Tuesday)
  • miércoles (Wednesday)
  • jueves (Thursday)
  • viernes (Friday)
  • sábado (Saturday)
  • domingo (Sunday)

Los Meses del Año (The Months of the Year)

  • enero (January)
  • febrero (February)
  • marzo (March)
  • abril (April)
  • mayo (May)
  • junio (June)
  • julio (July)
  • agosto (August)
  • septiembre (September)
  • octubre (October)
  • noviembre (November)
  • diciembre (December)

How To Form the Date in Spanish (It's not like English!! Blame the inventor of Spanish, not Mrs. Koss!):

day of the week + el + number in Spanish + de + month (Think: the twentieth of November)

For Example:

  • Tuesday, November 3 = martes, el tres de noviembre
  • Saturday, July 26 = sábado, el veintiseis de julio
  • Friday, January 14 = viernes, el catorce de enero

Exception: The First of Each Month:

For the first of each month, use the word primero instead of the word uno.

For Example:

  • April 1 = el primero de abril
  • August 1 = el primero de agosto

Now for the questions:

  • ¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy? (What is the date today?)
  • To answer: Hoy es lunes, el veinte de noviembre. (Today is Monday, November 20.)
  • ¿Qué día es hoy? (What day is it today?)
  • To answer: Hoy es lunes. (Today is Monday.)
  • ¿Cuál es la fecha de tu cumpleaños? (When is your birthday?)
  • To answer: Es el catorce de junio. (It is June 14th.)
