- un copain, une copine (friend)
- un camarade, une camarade (classmate)
- un étudiant, une étudiante (student)
- un élève, une élève (elementary school student)
- un homme (a man), une femme (a woman)
- un garçon (a boy), une fille (a girl)
- un voisin, une voisine (neighbor)
- un pére (father), une mére (mother)
- un frére (brother), une soeur (sister)
- un oncle (uncle), une tante (aunt)
- un cousin (cousin), une cousine (cousin)
- un grand-pére (grandfather), une grand-mére (grandmother)
Watch out for these:
- un professeur (teacher): always masculine, even if the teacher is a woman
- Mme Koss est le professeur de français. (Mrs. Koss is the French teacher.)
- BUT:
- un prof, une prof (teacher): this can be shortened in casual speech. When it is shortened, a female teacher would be une prof.
- une personne (a person): always feminine, even if the person is a male.
- La personne là-bas est belle. (La personne here is Jean Luc, a boy.)
- des gens (people): always masculine, plural
