(If you are getting these notes because you were absent, please note that we don't usually do all of these in one day. You may already have some of these notes. Make sure you have the section for the day you missed.)

Section 1

Conversation:

These are samples of the conversation elements that we did in French 1.

Greetings

  • Bonjour! (Hello! Good morning!)
  • Salut! (Hi!)
  • Comment t'appelles-tu? (What's your name?)
  • Je m'appelle... (My name is...)
  • Je m'appelle Pierre. (My name is Pierre.)

How are you:

  • Ça va? (How are you?)
  • Comment ça va? (How are you?
  • Comment vas-tu? (How are you?)
  • Comment allez-vous? (How are you? to an adult or someone you are showing respect)
  • Ça va... (I'm ...
  • Je vais... (I'm...)
  • bien (well, fine)

The Time

  • Quelle heure est-il?

  • 7:20 (Il est sept heures vingt.)
  • 9:15 (Il est neuf heures et quart.)

When the big hand clicks one minute past the :30 minute mark, the pattern changes. Instead of "How many minutes past the hour?" We ask, "How many minutes until the next hour?"

  • 4:35 Think: "It is 25 of 5." (Il est cinq heures moins vingt-cinq.)
  • 2:51 Think: "It is 9 of 3." (Il est trois heures moins neuf.)
  • 6:45 Think" "It is quarter of 7." (Il est sept heures moins le quart.)
  • Don't forget:
  • du matin (in the morning)
  • de l'aprés-midi (in the afternoon)
  • du soir (in the evening)

The Date

  • Quelle est la date aujourd'hui? (What's the date today?)
