Tu or Vous (They both mean YOU)

tu: you (singular, friendly)

Use tu to say you when talking to:

  • children
  • friends
  • family members
  • people you know very well
  • people younger than you are
  • people with whom you are on a first name basis

For example:

Pierre will use tu to talk to the following people:

Pierre says, "Tu es américaine?" because he is talking to a child.
Pierre says, "Tu es de Pennsylvania?" because he is talking to his buddy, Luc
