Introducing Family Members

  • Voici mon père. (Here is my father.)
  • Et voici ma mère. (And here is my mother.)

Possessive Adjective: my & your

Now we're putting mon, ma, ton or ta in front of each word. Mon and ma mean my. Ton and ta mean your. These are called Possessive Adjectives.

masculinefeminine
mon (my) ma (my)
mon copain (my friend) ma copine (my friend)
ton (your)ta (your)
ton copain (your friend)ta copine (your friend)

In addition we have an issue that I like to call the Big, Ugly Vowel (the BUV). This is where you have two vowel sound back-to-back in French.

To avoid this, you will use mon or ton before a noun starting with a vowel sound, even if it's feminine. For example:

masculinefeminine
mon ami (my male friend) mon amie (my female friend)
ton ami (your male friend)ton amie (your female friend)
