Lesson 1 Test Study Guide

1. Listening

  1. Ça va?: You will hear the CD Man asking people how they are. They will answer in French. You will check the column that describes how they feel. Study the Ça va section carefully.
  2. Masculine or Feminine: The CD Man will give descriptions of people. You will indicate if he is describing a male or female. You will have to listen carefully to the nationalities to see if it is masculine or feminine.
  3. Nationalities: People will give their nationalities in French. You will indicate which nationality was said. You will need to study the nationalities vocabulary.
  4. Numbers: CD Man will give French phone numbers in groups of 2 (03-45-52-33, for example). You will write down the numbers as he reads them. They speak very quickly, so study the numbers really well.

2. Writing

  1. Writing a postcard: You will need to study hello, how are you, and goodbye, how are you, and nationalities.
    • say hello
    • ask how she is
    • give your name
    • give your nationality
    • say what city you are from
    • say goodbye
    • sign your name
  2. Multiple Choice: Here are some things to watch out for: (These aren't actually like the questions on the test. I just want to show you some things you might see on the test.) Make sure you study the pages that are linked above!
  3. Je suis de Paris. Et toi?
    • Oui, je suis de New York. (wrong answer)
    • Non, je suis de Paris. (wrong answer)
    • Non, je suis français. (wrong answer)
    • Oui, je suis française. (right answer)
    • Non, je suis de New York. (right answer)
    • Non, je suis américain. (right answer)

    Obviously this is just for example. There will only be 3 choices for each question, and only 1 will be right.

    • Make sure you know monsieur (M.), madame (Mme), and mademoiselle (Mlle).
    • Know how to address friends (salut, ca va, etc.) and adults (bonjour, au revoir).
    • Make sure your country agrees with the nationality.
  4. Culture: Multiple Choice. Make sure you study the Notes Culturelles and the Petits Commentaires from each section of Lesson 1!
  5. Reading: Signs, ads, business cards, etc. in French. Multiple choice questions in English.
  6. Formal or Informal: I give you pictures of people, some adults, some young people. You will have two choices of how to address each person.
